An Interview With | Steve Strongman

Steve Strongman is about to drop his new album No Time Like Now this Friday, so how cool is it that we get to help him talk about it? The lead single of the same name is a hugely excitable eruption of Bluesy tunes determined to make you have a good time, and the album also looks to do the same! Check out the interview below, and enjoy!

Hi Steve, how’s it going? Fantastic, thanks!

What’s the story behind how you came to create your own music? I have always been in original bands creating music. I was on the road touring in Canada with another band when I realized I wanted to focus on my own career. I felt like I had something to say and needed to get out into the world, and I’ve been writing ever since.

What can you tell us about your new single “No Time Like Now”? It’s a very exciting track! I’m really pleased with the way it turned out. I wrote the main guitar riff first and the rest of the song was built from there.  It’s about seizing the moment.

Listening to the track it seems steeped in the notion to simply have a good time. Is this something we can expect from your new album? Yes, there are lots of high-energy fun tunes on this record, but there’s also some more introspective material too. It has something for everyone.

Well we’re on the subject, what can you tell us about your new record No Time Like Now?  It was very interesting to make this record because my two previous releases were so different, so I wanted to continue to push the boundaries of what people consider to be blues music. It was a thrill to get Randy Bachman on my cd as well, we did a cover of his classic “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet”. This record showcases a lot of different styles artistically for me, I’m really happy with how it turned out.

What was it like winning a JUNO Award? Incredible.  I wasn’t expecting to win, I was just enjoying the entire experience.  I don’t think any artist sets out to write music to win awards, but when you receive that kind of recognition if it a very special feeling.

You’re a part of Sonic Unyon Records, which houses the likes of WTCHS and Terra Lightfoot. What’s it like to be a part of such a diverse record label? It’s great. My relationship with Sonic Unyon happened in a very organic way — we are all friends first. They are extremely passionate about music. They like all different styles as long as they’re done well.

Once the new record is released, what should we expect from you later on this year? More new music, touring etc…Yes, performing live is the cornerstone of what I do, so I’m looking forward to getting back out on the road and getting these songs out into the world.  It’s a very exciting record and it will be so fun to get a chance to connect these songs with a live audience.
